Citron to Learn in November if He’ll Serve Time in Jail

Former County Treasurer Robert L. Citron, who pleaded guilty to six counts of securities fraud and misappropriation of public funds, will have to wait until November to learn whether he will serve time in jail.

Judge J. Stephen Czuleger indicated that Citron will learn his fate after a two-day sentencing hearing scheduled for Nov. 18-19. Citron’s attorney, David W. Wiechert, has indicated that he plans to call several witnesses to testify on his client’s behalf.

Citron, 71, faces up to 14 years in prison, but a Probation Department report has recommended that he instead be sentenced to a year or less in County Jail and to a term of probation.

Czuleger, a Los Angeles judge who was appointed earlier this year to sentence Citron, had postponed the former treasurer’s sentencing hearing in May, saying he didn’t want publicity about the case to affect jurors in the trial of former Budget Director Ronald S. Rubino.
