CD to Commemorate Fender Instruments’ 50th Year

Fender Musical Instruments, launched by Leo Fender 50 years ago in Fullerton, will have a commemorative CD out Oct. 1 as part of its anniversary observance.

“Fender 50th Anniversary Guitar Legends,” on the Pointblank/Virgin label, compiles 17 previously issued, Fender-driven tracks by Buddy Holly, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards and Dick Dale, among others.

Dale, who launched the surf-guitar movement in the early ‘60s from a base in Orange County, will soon have his signature, as well as the imprints of his strumming and picking hands, embedded in Hollywood sidewalk concrete. Along with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt and Richie Blackmore of Deep Purple--all of whom also appear on the Fender tribute CD--Dale will be honored Friday with induction into Hollywood’s Rock Walk. The ceremony, in front of the Guitar Center at 7425 Sunset Blvd., will take place at noon and will be open to the public.

QUIET ZONE: Club 369 in Fullerton is jumping on the “unplugged” bandwagon with an acoustic night Sept. 24 featuring a lineup of typically amped-up rockers. Appearing are Brian Coakley of Rule 62, Coleen Rider with Frank Agnew, members of Mind Driver, Burnin’ Groove, Walnut Grove, Foam, This Trip and Mulch, and Randy Cash.
