General Manager Jack Ferreira, whose acquisition of Teemu Selanne last season sparked the Ducks to a strong finish that ended one point shy of the playoffs, has signed a three-year contract extension through the 1998-99 season, he said.

Ferreira, 52, previously was general manager of the San Jose Sharks and the Minnesota North Stars.

The unusual contract saga of center J.F. Jomphe ended Friday after he agreed to a one-year contract that will pay him $250,000 if he makes the NHL team or $60,000 in the minors. Jomphe will arrive in Southern California today.

Jomphe, 23, faces competition to make the team.

“He’s got to play well, obviously,” assistant general manager David McNab said, citing depth at center where the Ducks have Jari Kurri, Steve Rucchin, Alex Hicks, Shaun Van Allen and Joe Day.

Paul Kariya would have been playing for Canada in the decisive game of the World Cup tonight if not for the abdominal muscle injury that forced him to withdraw, and he has been on the edge of his seat watching the finals.

“I got over [the disappointment] early,” Kariya said. “I just watch the games as a fan now.”
