Reimbursement for Jail Inmates Sought

Share

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is seeking more than $1.3 million in reimbursement from the federal government to pay for holding illegal immigrants in the county jail and juvenile detention facilities.

Sheriff Larry Carpenter says that between July 1, 1995, and June 30, 1996, his department identified 245 inmates in the jail who qualified the county for reimbursement under the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program. In addition, there were 10 juvenile inmates who qualified.

The average length of incarceration was 99 days, Carpenter said.

The federal assistance program is administered by the U.S. Department of Justice. Carpenter said that in 1995, state governments received only 16% of the money requested.
