City’s First Dog Park Nears Final Approval
Plans for the city’s first park for dogs could be approved by the City Council tonight.
Under the proposal, a 1.1-acre site on Golden Lantern near Chapparosa Park would be graded and fenced at a cost of about $75,000.
Golden Lantern Dog Park has been approved in concept by the council, which appropriated funding for the project last year in the 1995-96 fiscal budget.
“It’s a place to meet other people who own dogs,” said Councilwoman Janet Godfrey, who has been the strongest advocate of providing a dog park. “It’ll also be a good way to foster community togetherness, get people together. We really don’t have a place like that in the city.”
The park would be gated to control dogs entering and exiting. Other amenities on the site would include trash cans, signs and dispensers for dog waste disposal bags.
A city-owned parking lot at a fire station adjacent to the park site could be used by dog owners.
City officials said the park could be used by up to 50 dogs and their owners at one time.
