City OKs More Funds for Powerboat Races

Share

The Ventura City Council has approved an additional $14,500 for upcoming powerboat races, but race organizers will be required to use their profits to repay the money.

The city gave the Ventura Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix Assn. $60,000 in seed funding last year to bring a national offshore powerboat race and festivities to Ventura.

But festival Chairman Gerald Nordskog told council members Monday night there is not enough money to cover expenses for policing and fire and ambulance standby required for the event.

Getting the high-profile powerboat races to Ventura is considered a coup, with the city hoping the event will bring money and interest to the area.

The races, scheduled Sept. 25-29, have grown to include a parade and other activities. Many anticipate that TV coverage of the national event will give the area nationwide exposure.

The event is also expected to reel in business for local hotels and restaurants. Already six major hotels are fully booked.
