Bitterlich’s Long Shot Lifts Cypress in Overtime

Cypress goalkeeper Cody Bitterlich made a length of the pool shot in the final second of the first sudden-death overtime to give the Chargers a 12-10 victory over San Diego Mesa in an Orange Empire Conference water polo opener Tuesday at Cypress.

Bitterlich stopped 13 shots by the Olympians during regulation and overtime.

Cliff Popper and Joe Johnson scored three goals each for Cypress (6-1, 1-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo:

San Diego Mesa 16, Cypress 6--After a close first quarter, San Diego blew it open, scoring nine points in the second half.

Sean Craig and Leann Best scored for Cypress, which was playing in its debut game in the sport.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Fullerton 4, Glendale 2--Marc Rodieck, formerly of Esperanza High, scored for Fullerton (2-1), which led, 1-0, at the half.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Rancho Santiago 2, Cerritos 1--Julie Patton scored the winning goal for Rancho Santiago (2-3) late in the second half. Christina Lopez scored Rancho Santiago’s first goal.
