Conditions Present Challenge to Competitors at Lower Trestles

Share

In the second day of competition in the BodyGlove SurfBout at Lower Trestles, interference calls were common as inconsistent conditions forced the surfers to fight for the good waves in the second and third and part of the fourth rounds of the men’s trials.

Colin McPhillips of Capistrano Beach was called for interference in his fourth-round heat. That kept him from advancing to the main event.

Some county surfers remain in the competition. David Pinto of San Juan Capistrano, who built on his strong performance Monday, advanced to the first round of the main event. Also advancing were Laguna Niguel’s Perry Faanes, Tyler Morehead and Brandy Faber of Laguna Beach, and Ryan Turner of Huntington Beach.

Josh Baxter and Jim Hogan, who normally compete on longboards, both advanced to the fourth round in the shortboard competition. The two San Clemente surfers will compete later this week in the longboard event.

Eric Totah of Haiku, Hawaii, recorded the best wave score (9.0) and overall score (22.50) of the day.

Competition continues today with the conclusion of the fourth round and the start of the main round.
