Late Orange Coast Field Goal Is Enough to Beat Pasadena
Nate Bennett made a 19-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to give Orange Coast a 20-17 victory over Pasadena in Mission Conference play Saturday at Orange Coast.
Bennett, a sophomore from Woodbridge High, has made all 10 field-goal attempts at Orange Coast.
Bennett started the scoring with 19-yard field goal early in the first quarter. Pasadena (1-1) took a 7-3 lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Arlen Slayton, but Marquis Battle’s 21-yard touchdown reception from John Frank gave the lead back to Orange Coast (1-1).
After Pasadena tied the score with a 31-yard field goal from Santiago Vazquez, James Maldonado gave Orange Coast a seven-point lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Chad Collins.
Tomahawk Maddox tied the score with 10 minutes remaining on 60-yard touchdown run.
In other Mission Conference games:
Long Beach 31, Rancho Santiago 26--The Dons, who trailed at halftime, 31-7, rallied for 17 points in the third quarter, but fell short.
Jon Daniels caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Matt Mitchell to give Rancho Santiago a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. However, Long Beach responded by scoring 31 consecutive points in the first half.
The Dons (0-2) cut the lead to seven after three quarters on a 36-yard field goal by Jerry Arguello and two touchdown passes by Mark Fausto. However, Rancho Santiago could only manage a safety in the fourth quarter.
Cerritos 45, Golden West 17--Dan Palanca recovered teammate Charles Chatman’s fumble in the end zone to tie the score, 17-17. Cerritos responded by scoring 28 points.
Trailing, 14-0, the Rustlers (0-2) cut into the lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Chatman and a 24-yard field goal by Kevin Bever. After Cerritos (2-0) added a field goal, Palanca tied the score with his fumble recovery.
