Cal Tailback Is Out for Season
California running back Tarik Smith, one of the top rushers in the country, faces surgery to repair a serious knee injury and will sit out the rest of the season, team officials said.
An MRI exam revealed Smith tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in his right knee when his leg was bent backward in a pileup during Saturday’s 33-15 victory over Nevada.

Billy Blanton threw a career-high five touchdown passes and Ricky Parker returned an interception 59 yards for a score as San Diego State (2-1) won, 51-31, over Oklahoma (0-2) late Saturday night. . . . Glenn Freitas threw for two touchdowns and Carlos Shaw rushed for 103 yards to lead Hawaii (1-3) to a 20-14 come-from-behind victory over Boise State (1-3) Saturday night in Honolulu.
