Council Approves Water Well Monitors

Share

Despite a last-minute protest by an environmental group, the City Council approved the installation of two small water well monitors northwest of California 33 and west of Foster Park.

The monitors will be about the circumference of microphones and penetrate about 100 feet into the ground. They will test the quality and quantity of water in existing wells.

John Bussey of the Environmental Defense Center of Santa Barbara asked that the monitors be restricted to shallow wells in limited areas to avoid possible pollution of deeper wells that provide water to Ventura residents.

After hearing Bussey, Councilman Steve Bennett asked the staff to look into the effect of the monitors.

Assistant City Manager Steve Chase said he would, but assured the council that the monitors are needed to properly manage city water supplies.

Councilman Ray Di Guilio said Bussey had waited too long to bring his concerns to the council.
