EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Peter Vermes scored in the 11th round of a shootout Tuesday night to give New York-New Jersey a 3-2 victory over D.C. United in the first game of the MLS Eastern Conference playoff series.
Vermes’ low bouncing shot eluded goalkeeper Jeff Causey, giving the MetroStars a 6-5 edge in the shootout. New York-New Jersey can wrap up the best-of-three first-round series Friday night at Washington.
Giovanni Savarese tied it 2-2 in the 75th minute, a minute after he entered the game as a substitute. Savarese beat defender Eddie Pope to a low cross from Antony De Avila.
United’s Raul Diaz Arce opened the scoring in the 24th minute, and De Avila tied it in the 38th minute.
