City to Get 3 Police Officers, Equipment

Share

State legislation aimed at putting more police on the streets will allow Camarillo to hire three officers and purchase new crime-fighting equipment before the end of the year.

The City Council has agreed to spend nearly $200,000 to add an extra deputy, crime analyst and service technician to its cadre of officers patrolling the city of 60,000 residents.

The money also will pay for a new police car and computer equipment. Camarillo contracts for police services with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Under the new legislation--dubbed Citizens Options for Public Safety--Camarillo is expected to receive $130,000 to pay most of those costs.

“We’re always happy to be able to increase police services,” Mayor David M. Smith said.

“We’re expecting to get it every year, but it can be withdrawn. There aren’t any guarantees.”

Camarillo Police Chief Ray Abbott said he expects to fill the positions by Dec. 1.
