Issuing Firearms

Re “Park Rangers Seek Right to Bear Arms for Protection,” Sept. 23.

So Los Angeles park rangers are getting tired of facing armed criminals with little more than pepper spray in their hands. They would like to be able to carry firearms. Ranger Doug Kilpatrick is quoted as saying, “We’re asking for what we perceive as a safety tool.”

Interesting. What about us law-abiding citizens who are getting tired of facing armed criminals with little more than pepper spray in our hands? We would like a safety tool, too. Los Angeles and California must join over 30 other states in providing [concealed-weapons] permits to law-abiding citizens of our city and state who wish to protect themselves.

The article went on to say, “Ranger Charles Shorts, wearing his brown uniform and bulletproof vest, said he realized the importance of being armed after a confrontation with a group of trespassing youths who were carrying weapons.” I don’t doubt him.
