4 Sets of Triplets Are Born at Long Beach Hospital in 3 Weeks; All Are Doing Well

A Long Beach pediatric hospital was home Saturday to four sets of triplets who were born over the past three weeks.

“I think it’s the first time we’ve had four at the same time,” said Dr. Penny Jacinto of Miller Children’s Hospital at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Although all of the births were premature, and the infants must remain in the neonatal intensive care unit for treatment, Jacinto said the four mothers and 12 babies are healthy. Only one infant remains on a ventilator, she said.

The first set of triplets was born Sept 3. The most recent set was born Friday. The second set was born Sept. 15 to Kathy Martinez, 32, a nurse at the hospital.

Jacinto said the unusual number of triplets has not created any problems at the hospital.

“We are used to a huge number of deliveries,” she said.
