A 7-year-old boy suffered critical head injuries Tuesday when he ran across a busy street and was struck by a car, investigators said.
The boy, whose name was being withheld by police, was crossing Orangethorpe Avenue at Pacific Drive with his aunt and another relative about 2:30 p.m. when the adults noticed that he was lagging behind and told him to hurry, Police Sgt. Glenn Deveny said.
“He ran past them and into oncoming traffic,” Deveny said.
The boy, who was in a marked crosswalk, was struck by a car driven by a 26-year-old woman who appeared to have been within the 45-mph speed limit.
The boy was taken to the pediatric unit of UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was reported in critical condition Tuesday night.
