Top Players Reach Quarterfinals in Senior Hardcourt Tennis
The six seeded players in 65 singles advanced to the quarterfinals at the women’s U.S. Tennis Assn. Senior Hardcourt Championships Tuesday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
Top-seeded Elaine Mason defeated Marilyn Vander Velde, 6-0, 6-1, and Liz Harper beat Marian Peterson, 6-1, 6-1. Doris Clark defeated Elizabeth Harrison, 6-0, 6-2, and June Gay beat Lorry Wroblewski, 6-2, 6-1. Peggy Winningham defeated Joan Hirsch, 6-0, 6-0, and Louise Russ beat Nancy Kibbey, 6-4, 6-2.
In 75 singles, top-seeded Dodo Cheney won, 6-3, 6-1, over LaVelle Kelly. Eleanor Harbula won, 6-0, 6-0, against Jean Harris. Lucy Dettmer defeated Valentine Popel, 6-0, 6-0, and Muriel Bard beat Irene Boylan, 6-1, 6-1.
