Seats Left for Seminar on President Debates

Share

Only 100 tickets are left for a symposium on the history of presidential debates scheduled Oct. 15 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library near Simi Valley.

CNN anchorman Bernard Shaw is to give the opening address, and Washington Post columnist David Broder the closing speech at the daylong conference, which will examine the history of modern presidential debates since Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy squared off on television in 1960.

Between the two speeches, panels of pundits and journalists will discuss the history and structure of the debates.

The panelists include “60 Minutes” executive producer Don Hewitt, who produced and directed the Kennedy-Nixon debate; TV correspondent Sander Vanocur, a veteran panelist of two debates; Copley Newspapers editor-in-chief Herb Klein; former Reagan press aide Lyn Nofziger, and USC law professor Susan Estrich, who was campaign manager for Michael Dukakis.

Former NBC News correspondent Edwin Newman--who moderated a Ronald Reagan-Walter Mondale debate in 1984 and the 1976 tete-a-tete between Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford--will moderate the morning panel discussion on “Great Historical Moments.”

ABC News reporter Sam Donaldson, former chief White House correspondent, will moderate the afternoon discussion on “Format and Future” of presidential debates.

Tickets are $35 per person, but remaining seating is limited. Reserve tickets by calling the Reagan Foundation at (805) 522-2977.
