NOTES : Alomar Gets an Earful

Share

Thunderous boos greeted Roberto Alomar each time he stepped out of the dugout at Jacobs Field. They booed his name when the lineups were introduced. They booed when he came to bat. They booed when he caught a pop-up.

Alomar was asked if he had heard anything like it before in his career.

“What do you think?” asked Alomar, who had been expecting this sort of reaction ever since he spit in the face of umpire John Hirschbeck last week. “They’re just trying to get you out of your game. I’m going to play the game again [today]. This is my job. I just want to focus on baseball.”

Alomar, who led the Orioles with a .328 average during the regular season, hasn’t had much of an impact in this series. Friday, he grounded out, struck out twice and walked. His average is only .182.

B.J. Surhoff had just hammered a three-run homer to give the Orioles a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning. The crowd seemed deflated, so Indian designated hitter Kevin Seitzer grabbed a towel and started waving it, exhorting the crowd to get fired up.

“Maybe it was bush league to stand up and start waving that towel, but those fans needed to stand up and get in the game,” he said.
