A Glendale teenager was killed and another critically injured when the car they were driving in struck a utility pole, authorities said.

Alex Abkar, the 18-year-old driver, was pronounced dead at the scene where rescuers found him trapped in the car, said Sgt. Ed Wheelis of the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division.

The passenger, identified only as a 19-year-old, was found by rescuers a few feet in front of the Honda Accord, apparently having been ejected from the car. He was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills and treated for abdominal injuries.

The accident occurred about 1:45 p.m. Friday in the 6400 block of Foothill Boulevard, near Tujunga Canyon Place, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

“The accident did draw a large crowd of onlookers,” Humphrey said. “The car was literally wrapped around the pole.”

No other vehicles or people were involved, Humphrey said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation, police officials said.
