Laguna Beach’s Clark Defeated in the Finals
Louise Russ of Deerfield Beach, Fla., defeated Laguna Beach’s Doris Clark, 7-6, 6-0, to win the 65 singles title at the U.S. Tennis Assn. Senior Women’s Hardcourt Championship on Saturday at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
La Jolla’s Liz Harper finished third by defeating Fresno’s Elaine Mason, 1-6, 7-6, 6-2.
Dorothy Cheney of La Jolla defeated Sylmar’s Eleanor Harbula, 6-2, 7-5, to win the 75 singles championship. Lucy Dettmer of Cathedral City was third, defeating Laguna Hills’ Muriel Bard, 6-1, 6-1.

Third-seeded Mercedes Paz of Argentina advanced to the finals of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Women’s Challenger of Newport Beach at the Newport Beach Marriott.
Paz defeated Australia’s Siobhan Drake-Brockman, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, Saturday. Brockman defeated second-seeded Rene Simpson to open the tournament, and proved to be a tough opponent throughout the event.
Ukraine’s Elena Brioukhovets also advanced, defeating third-seeded Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Monaco, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Paz and Brioukhovets play in the final today at noon.
