Purdue Has Plenty in Reserve in 30-27 Victory

Kendall Matthews, pressed into action when fullback Edwin Watson was injured on his first carry of the game, rushed for a career-high 131 yards and scored twice as Purdue handed Minnesota its first loss of the season, 30-27, Saturday at West Lafayette, Ind.

The Boilermakers (2-3, 1-1) took advantage of mistakes by the Golden Gophers (3-1, 0-1) in building a 27-19 halftime lead, starting when Derrick Brown intercepted Cory Sauter’s pass and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown on the game’s fourth play.

Illinois 46, Indiana 43--After the Hoosiers had to settle for a 47-yard field goal by Bill Manolopoulos, Scott Weaver threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Jason Dulick in the second overtime at Champaign, Ill.

It was Weaver’s fourth touchdown pass of the game for Illinois (2-3, 1-1).

Indiana (2-3, 0-2) had tied the score at 33 with 47 seconds remaining on Jay Rodgers’ 12-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Wilkerson and a two-point conversion pass to Ajamu Stoner.

Iowa 37, Michigan State 30--Matt Sherman threw two touchdown passes to Chris Knipper and another to Sedrick Shaw as the Hawkeyes scored on their first four possessions of the second half for a come-from-behind victory at Iowa City.

Iowa (3-1, 1-0) overcame a 17-0 first-quarter deficit to defeat Michigan State (2-3, 1-1) for the third consecutive time.
