No. 12 Virginia Ambushed by Georgia Tech

C.J. Williams scored on a three-yard run and set up a field goal with a 50-yard run as Georgia Tech upset No. 12 Virginia, 13-7, Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Atlanta, snapping the Cavaliers’ winning streak at five games.

Tech (4-1 overall, 4-1 in the ACC) built a 13-0 lead in the first 20 minutes and went on to snap a losing streak at four games in the series.

Virginia (4-1, 2-1) cut the lead to 13-7 on Tiki Barber’s one-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and appeared to be driving for a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter before Nathan Perryman intercepted Aaron Brooks’ pass after the Cavaliers had moved to the Georgia Tech 28.

Virginia had one more chance, starting on its 41 with 1:44 to go. Brooks scrambled for 32 yards to the Tech 27, then completed a second-down pass to the 18 before the drive stalled. Ralph Hughes batted down Brooks’ third-down pass and the fourth-down pass was incomplete, allowing Tech to run out the clock.

No. 15 North Carolina 45, Wake Forest 6--Leon Johnson scored on a five-yard run and a 94-yard kickoff return as the Tar Heels extended the Deamon Deacons ACC losing streak to 12 at Winston-Salem, N.C.

North Carolina (4-1, 3-1) defeated Wake Forest (2-4, 0-4) for the seventh consecutive time.

North Carolina State 34, Maryland 8--Quarterback Jose Laureano threw for two touchdowns as the Wolfpack scored the first 24 points and cruised to victory at College Park, Md.

The Wolfpack (1-3, 1-2) began eight of 14 possessions inside Maryland territory, and another on the 50.

Maryland is 2-3 and 0-2.
