NOTES : Weathers Is Fine for the Yankees

Share

David Weathers gave up five runs in two-thirds of an inning against the Angels on Aug. 20. The next day, the Yankees demoted him to triple-A Columbus with a 0-2 record and 14.82 earned-run average as a starter.

Hard to believe that was the same Weathers at the Ballpark in Arlington Saturday, striking out Ranger slugger Juan Gonzalez, extracting the Yankees from a fourth-inning, two-on, no-out situation and completely demoralizing the Rangers.

“He struggled with us and was sent down, but we wanted him for our bullpen,” Yankee Manager Joe Torre said. “For him to come back and do what he did was terrific.”

The Rangers batted .218 in the series, but take away Gonzalez’s .438 average, five homers and nine runs batted in, and the non-Juans combined to bat .190 with one homer and seven RBIs. . . . In five career division-series games, Yankee reliever Mariano Rivera is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10 innings. . . . The Rangers and the Yankees combined to use 13 pitchers, a record for a nine-inning postseason game, and the eight pitchers used by Texas equals the postseason record. . . . Bernie Williams’ ninth-inning homer against Mike Stanton was the first earned run Stanton had given up in 24 2/3 consecutive innings over 21 postseason appearances.
