Shortstop Alex Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners was voted the Player of the Year in player survey conducted by The Sporting News.

In other awards, catcher Jason Kendall of the Pittsburgh Pirates was selected Rookie of the Year in the National League; shortstop Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees was selected the American League Rookie of the Year; Bruce Bochy of the San Diego Padres was selected National League Manager of the Year; Johnny Oates of the Texas Rangers was selected American League Manager of the Year; Doug Melvin of the Rangers was selected Executive of the Year; shortstop Kevin Elster of the Rangers was the American League’s Comeback Player of the Year; outfielder Eric Davis of the Cincinnati Reds was the National League’s Comeback Player of the Year; John Smoltz of the Atlanta Braves was the National League’s Pitcher of the Year; and Andy Pettite of the New York Yankees was the American League’s Pitcher of the Year.

Joe Hoerner, a former St. Louis Cardinal reliever, died Friday in a farming accident at a friend’s farm in Hermann, Mo. He was 60.

Hoerner had gotten off a tractor to move an object, and was killed when the tractor ran him over.
