Hearing for Golf Course Plan Is Today

Share

The city of Los Angeles will conduct a public hearing today to discuss the most recent proposal to build a golf course in environmentally sensitive Big Tujunga Wash.

Since 1987, developer Cosmo World Corp. has waged a protracted battle with neighbors, environmentalists, the state Department of Fish and Game and the Army Corps of Engineers to build the course.

Opponents have steadfastly objected to the project because of concerns about its effect on the wash’s rare sage scrub habitat and the tiny, endangered spineflower that thrives there.

Earlier this year, in an attempt to win support for the project, Cosmo modified the proposal to offer greater protection for native vegetation and to make it a public rather than a private course. Then, in August, the nonprofit National Golf Foundation announced it had signed a deal to develop and operate the course with Cosmo retaining ownership.

Since August, some former opponents have said they will support the course in its modified form. Others, however, remain opposed.

“Our position is the same as it has been for the last two or three years,” said Sandy Wohlgemuth of the San Fernando Valley Audubon Society. “It’s disgraceful. We are opposed to their whole philosophy. You don’t build a golf course on environmentally sensitive land.”

Kathy Anthony, president of the Sunland-Tujunga Chamber of Commerce, said that a large majority of chamber members voted in favor of the development during a referendum Tuesday, siding with Cosmo.

“They have addressed our concerns and we think it will definitely enhance the community,” Anthony said. “The golf course will bring in jobs; it can really be an asset for this area.”

Tom Henry, planning deputy for Los Angeles City Councilman Joel Wachs, said Wachs “is neutral, he has not taken a position on this.”

“He is going to wait until all the facts come out so he can make a fully informed decision,” Henry said.

The hearing will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. at the Verdugo Hills High School auditorium, at Summitrose Street and Plainview Avenue in Tujunga.
