Suspensions Lifted for Four Starters

Share

Four USC starters suspended for a game by the university last week for swapping school-issued football shoes for apparel, were cleared by the NCAA to play against Arizona Saturday at the Coliseum.

They are defensive tackle Darrell Russell, linebacker Sammy Knight, safety Brian Kelly and wide receiver Larry Parker. All practiced Tuesday.

The NCAA notified USC at mid-day Tuesday that it had accepted USC’s one-game penalties for violating the extra-benefits rule and will take no further action.

Coach John Robinson seemed pleased with tailback Shawn Walters’ first practice appearance in weeks. Walters was under suspension for 13 games, a penalty mostly related to accepting money from an agent’s runner a year ago.

“Tuesday is primarily a teaching day, but I thought he looked good, assignment-wise,” Robinson said of Walters. “He’ll play some [against Arizona].”

Tailback Delon Washington didn’t practice Tuesday because of a thigh bruise and guard Travis Claridge left practice early after aggravating a shoulder injury. Receiver Billy Miller, who jammed a shoulder against Cal, wore an ice pack on the shoulder during practice. . . . Kickoff for the USC-Arizona State game Oct. 19 at Tempe will be at 12:30 p.m.
