An Apple by Any Other Name

* Akane: A Japanese apple, also known as Tokyo Rose. Bright red skin. Mostly available in the Northwest.
* Elstar: A Dutch cross between a Golden Delicious and an Ingrid Marie. Appearance similar to Jonagold. Grown in the Northwest.
* Fuji: Yellow background with red blush. Widely planted in the Northwest. Sweetest are those left on trees until late October and November.
* Gala, Royal Gala: Pale yellow background with pink-red stripe or blush. Several strains widely planted in the West.
* Golden Delicious: Yellow-green to golden yellow skin that may be russeted. Grown mostly in Washington, Appalachia and the Midwest.
* Granny Smith: Light-green skinned with slight yellowish blush. Grown on the West Coast. Those harvested after mid-October are the sweetest.
* Gravenstein: There are green and red strains. Grown mainly in the West but also in New England and Appalachia.
* Jonagold: Cross between a Jonathan and a Golden Delicious, which is why the skin is yellow with a red blush. Grown in the Northwest.
* Jonathan: Bright, shiny red skin. Grown in the West.
* Melrose: A Red Delicious-Jonathan cross. Red and green skin. Grown in western Washington and Oregon.
* Matsu/Crispin: Developed in Japan from the Golden Delicious. Yellow-green skin. Grown in the Northwest and East.
* Newtown Pippin: Also just called Pippin. Green to greenish-yellow skin, often slightly russeted. Grown in California and Oregon.
* Rome Beauty: Smooth red skin that is sometimes variegated with greenish-yellow stripes. Grown in almost all apple-producing areas.
* Spartan: Developed in British Columbia, which supplies most of this variety sold in the U.S. Two-toned, red and green skin.
* Stayman Winesap: Cross between these two earlier varieties. Grown in Northwest, Midwest and East.
