Study to Consider Improvement District
In the latest effort to revitalize earthquake-damaged areas, the Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday set aside $75,000 to fund a study that could lead to the formation of a business improvement district in Canoga Park.
The funds provided by the federal government will pay for a consultant to study the feasibility of creating the improvement district, which would collect fees from businesses to pay for landscaping, bus benches, street lights and other projects.
The improvement district concept has been endorsed by business leaders in Canoga Park who suffered serious damage in the 1994 Northridge earthquake, particularly along the Antique Row district on Sherman Way.
The Canoga Park Merchants Assn. and the Canoga Park Chamber of Commerce will work with city officials to select the consultant.
The district is expected to be created within a year and managed by a panel of local business leaders, said Ken Bernstein, an aide to Councilwoman Laura Chick, who represents the area and has endorsed the project.
In July, the council approved $225,000 to hire consultants for business improvement districts in Chatsworth, Northridge and Granada Hills.
