Warning on False Solicitation Issued

Ventura County prosecutors on Thursday issued an alert to local business owners who may become the targets of a false billing scheme.

The district attorney’s office warned that businesses in Thousand Oaks and Camarillo have recently been sent solicitations designed to look like invoices that request $980 for plastic trash can liners.

Some of the paperwork bears the company name U.S. Safety Inc. and requests that payment be made to Northeastern Environmental.

Both firms were traced to an address in Phoenixville, Pa., where a mail service does business, Deputy Dist. Atty. Gregory Brose said.

“We’ve had referrals from a couple of different businesses indicating that they had received these solicitations,” Brose said.

“They didn’t pay it, but they referred it to our office.”

Brose said Ventura County prosecutors will probably not pursue the case.

But the suspects are not off the hook. “We have an idea who did it, but we referred that information to the Pennsylvania authorities,” he said.
