WASHINGTON — Raul Diaz Arce’s spectacular three-goal performance led D.C. United to a 4-1 victory Thursday night over the Tampa Bay Mutiny in Game 1 of the Major Soccer League’s Eastern Conference finals.
Diaz Arce’s hat trick, which delighted the turnout of 23,566 at RFK Stadium, gave United a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
D.C. United goalkeeper Steve Simpson, who shut out the Mutiny at RFK twice in the regular season, made three big saves early in the second half before United’s scoring binge.
Tampa Bay will play host to Game 2 Saturday and, if necessary, Game 3 next Wednesday.
