Patrick Roy made 34 saves for his second shutout this week, and the Chicago Blackhawks were blanked for the second successive game in losing, 2-0, to the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night at Chicago.

Aaron Miller and Scott Young scored for the defending Stanley Cup champion Avalanche, who are 2-0-1 since starting the season with two losses.

The Blackhawks haven’t scored since the 17:35 mark of the third period Sunday at St. Louis--a span of 122 minutes 25 seconds.

Roy, who held San Jose without a goal on Tuesday, has 32 career shutouts to rank first among active goalies. His 313 victories rank 10th in NHL history.

It’s not the first time the Blackhawks have been bedeviled by Roy, who was spectacular in Colorado’s exciting second-round playoff victory last season.

Washington 6, Tampa Bay 2--Peter Bondra had two goals and two assists as the Capitals beat the Lightning at Landover, Md., for their first victory of the season.

Phil Housley added a goal and two assists and Jason Allison, Michal Pivonka and Joe Juneau also scored for the Capitals, who handed the Lightning their first defeat of the season. Keith Jones added two assists for Washington.

Ottawa 3, Pittsburgh 2--Alexei Yashin and Alexandre Daigle scored in the third period as the Senators overcame a 2-0 deficit to beat the winless Penguins at Kanata, Canada.

Daigle pulled Ottawa even 4:19 into the third and Yashin scored the winner with a power-play shot that deflected straight up off of Ken Wregget and back down behind the goaltender into the Penguins’ net at 7:31.

Pittsburgh, with Mario Lemieux in the lineup for all three games, has started its season with losses to Tampa Bay, Hartford and Ottawa.

Lemieux, whose goal against the Senators gave him five points in three games, couldn’t overshadow Pittsburgh’s many weaknesses, and the frustrated Penguins, including Lemieux, started a fight when the final buzzer sounded.

Calgary 2, Detroit 1--Trevor Kidd stopped 28 shots and Chris O’Sullivan assisted on both Calgary goals at Detroit to lead the Flames over the Red Wings.

Jarome Iginla and Robert Reichel scored for the Flames, who beat the Red Wings for the first time since March 24, 1995.

Detroit played without newly acquired forward Brendan Shanahan, who was suspended one game by the league for cross-checking Edmonton’s Greg de Vries during his Red Wing debut Wednesday.

Shanahan, who was also fined $1,000, was expected back in the Detroit lineup for tonight’s game at Buffalo.

Doug Brown scored for Detroit, which suffered its first home loss to Calgary since Jan. 22, 1995.

St. Louis 3, Edmonton 1--Brett Hull scored the game-winner with his first goal of the season to lift the Blues at Edmonton.

Seconds after Igor Kravchuk was stopped by Edmonton goaltender Curtis Joseph on a short-handed play, Hull rushed into the Oiler end, slipped around defenseman Bryan Marchment and lifted the puck over Joseph into the top of the net at 7:46 of the third period to give the Blues a 2-1 lead.

Rookie Jim Campbell added an insurance goal on a breakaway with 1:11 left in the third.
