* Re “$50-Million Gift Will Aid Immigrants,” Oct. 1:
Through the darkest days of the immigration debate, including the passage of Prop. 187, which would have allowed Latinos to be discriminated against merely by being suspected of being undocumented, and the welfare reform bill that will deny benefits to taxpaying legal permanent residents, I never have lost faith that the best of the American spirit will prevail. George Soros’ generosity and conscience are more examples why.
