Hebert Still No. 1 Despite Lackluster Start

Guy Hebert, besieged at times during the season-opening trip, remains the Mighty Ducks’ No. 1 goaltender, Coach Ron Wilson said. But Wilson has not decided who will start Wednesday’s home-opener against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Hebert has given up more than five goals per game and his save percentage is down considerably. Meanwhile, Mikhail Shtalenkov has performed well in his two starts, including a shutout against the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Ducks on Monday hired Francois Allaire to work with the goaltenders. Allaire worked for 12 seasons in the Montreal Canadiens’ organization.

“Sometimes when you let in a bad goal, you start thinking too much,” Wilson said. “Guy has put pressure on himself to perform at the level he did at the end of last season. He needs to relax. I think that shutout period he had [against Colorado], after giving up the six goals, helped him.”

Wilson called the 1-2-2 trip a success. “We got four points out of 10,” he said. “We identified some of the areas we need to work on. There are mistakes that have happened in games. We can address them.” . . . Center Joe Day, who had not played this season, was reassigned to the Baltimore Bandits.
