A 46-year-old man who police say shot into his girlfriend’s apartment, set fire to her car and led police on a chase on the Santa Monica Freeway near downtown Los Angeles shot himself to death Wednesday morning while driving, officials said.
Police identified the gunman, whose car crashed into several other vehicles as the pursuit ended, as Soon Eu Yi. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Yi had posted $150,000 bail in another case and was due in court today for a preliminary hearing on charges of forcible rape, assault with a deadly weapon by force with the intent of great bodily injury and two counts of spousal abuse, according to the district attorney’s office. It was unclear if the former girlfriend also was the victim in those crimes.
Officials say they received a call at about 5:17 a.m. Wednesday about a man “disturbing the peace with a gun” at a Koreatown apartment building.
Yi was “apparently upset over the breakup of his relationship with a former girlfriend,” according to an LAPD press release.
