Korda Defeats Ivanisevic, Advances at Czech Indoor

Petr Korda of the Czech Republic defeated top-seeded Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Czech Indoor tennis tournament at Ostrava.

Korda defeated Ivanisevic, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and will play countryman Jiri Novak in the quarterfinals.

In other second-round matches, No. 2 Wayne Ferreira of South Africa defeated Joost Winnink of the Netherlands, 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 7-5; No. 6 Michael Stich of Germany beat countryman Alex Radulescu, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, and No. 7 Tim Henman beat fellow Briton Greg Rusedski, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.

No. 3 Boris Becker of Germany withdrew, citing pain in his right wrist.

American Michael Joyce upset third-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov, 7-5, 6-3, at the Marlboro Championships in Hong Kong.

Former NBA guard Alvin Robertson was found guilty of one count of burglary stemming from a rampage at his ex-girlfriend’s apartment in San Antonio. Robertson could face two to 20 years in prison for burglary with intent to commit theft.

Sacramento King center Olden Polynice was arrested at his home on domestic assault charges after his live-in girlfriend complained he yanked keys from her hand and threw her against a wall, Sacramento police said.

John D’Acquisto, 44, a pitcher with the San Francisco Giants in the late 1970s, was sentenced to 63 months in a federal prison for defrauding Prudential Securities last year in New York.

Oregon State has appealed to the NCAA regarding basketball recruit Corey Benjamin’s test scores after he failed to make the minimum score required for the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the American College Testing (ACT) exam. Benjamin, a 6-foot-6 forward from Fontana, took the ACT test again in late September and had an acceptable score, but the date was outside the NCAA-required testing period, so the case had to be appealed to the NCAA Council Subcommittee on Initial Eligibility, said Oregon State Athletic Director Dutch Baughman.

Julio Cesar Chavez, the former world junior-welterweight boxing champion, must appear before authorities Nov. 6 to answer charges that he failed to pay $1.4 million in back taxes. The Mexico Ministry of Finance said in a statement, that Chavez has yet to make a single payment on the tax bill even though his mother and the boxer’s legal counsel admitted wrongdoing after meeting with government officials.

The state Department of Fish and Game will conduct a special drawing for 98 bear tags on Oct. 31 in Sacramento.
