The Orange County Hispanic Education Endowment Fund will honor teachers and school supporters at a Nov. 1 awards banquet and fund-raiser at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.

Recipients of the foundation’s “Apple of Gold Award” will be recognized for their contributions to education and youth. Most honorees are county teachers.

In less than three years, about $400,000 in scholarship money has been raised. The goal is $1 million by 1998.

The scholarship program benefits students from grammar school to graduate school.

“It’s to open the doors to give these kids a chance to blossom, to excel and to give back to their communities,” said Socorro Vasquez, co-chair of the awards dinner. “It’s to ensure that they are successful.”

The foundation was formed by Latino business people interested in helping the community’s youth, organizers said. Walt Disney Co. and McDonald’s are among the biggest corporate supporters.

The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Dinner is $100 per person for the general public and $50 for educators. Information: (714) 955-1433.
