El Toro Makes Sure This Game Against Woodbridge Isn’t Close

El Toro used a balanced running attack and its defense made big plays to beat Woodbridge, 37-7, in their Sea View League opener Friday night at Trabuco Hills.

El Toro, which had lost its last two games by five points, made sure this one would not be close. The Chargers (4-2, 1-0), took out their frustrations on the Warriors (0-6, 0-1).

“Our focus was to get back on track,” El Toro Coach Mike Milner said. “We did a lot of soul-searching in practice.”

Charger quarterbacks Brandon Wilde and Mike Strand completed only four passes in the first half but El Toro piled up 149 rushing yards, including a 25-yard touchdown run by Sam Moore.

El Toro led, 17-0, at halftime and never looked back.

The Chargers took a lead on their first possession of the game. El Toro drove 77 yards in 7 minutes 11 seconds and capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Wilde.

Woodbridge bounced back on a 63-yard pass from Steve Terwiske to Chad Harris on the Warriors’ first play from scrimmage.

But El Toro stopped Woodbridge inside the five-yard line and the Warriors failed to score because of a bad snap on a field-goal attempt.

An interception by El Toro’s Rayne Gurr in the third quarter led to a five-yard touchdown run by Murle Sango, which put the game away, 24-0.

Terwiske suffered a sprained neck in the third quarter and was taken to Irvine Medical Center for observation.
