Leyva Scores Twice, Sonora’s Defense Smothers Fullerton
Uri Leyva rushed for 68 yards and scored two touchdowns, including one on an interception return, as Sonora opened Freeway League play with a 35-13 victory over Fullerton on Friday.
Sonora (2-4, 1-0 in league play) held Fullerton (3-3, 0-1) in check in the first half, limiting the Indians to 35 yards in total offense. Fullerton did not advance the ball past its 37-yard line in the half.
On the third play of the game, Clint Patton connected with Aaron Winterswyk for a 53-yard touchdown pass to give Sonora a 7-0 lead.
With two minutes left in the first quarter, Leyva scored on a 27-yard rush to increase the lead to 14-0.
The Raiders made it 21-0 when Ralph Fernandez scored on a 19-yard run with 2:10 left in the half.
Fullerton, which had two first downs in the first half, used more than seven minutes to drive to its first touchdown. With 1:06 left in the third quarter, David Brookman caught a 12-yard pass from Justin Bruce to make the score 21-7.
Three minutes into the fourth quarter, Patton scored from two yards on a quarterback sneak to increase the Raiders’ lead to 28-7.
On Fullerton’s second play of the ensuing drive, Bruce was intercepted by Leyva, who returned it 34 yards for a score.
With 5:04 left, Michael Sailhamer caught a 25-yard pass from Bruce.
