Junior quarterback Damian DeFeo threw two touchdown passes to lead University to a 28-0 victory over Laguna Beach in a Pacific Coast League opener Friday night at Laguna Beach.

DeFeo completed 12 of 15 passes for 166 yards and rushed for 43 yards in nine carries.

University junior Victor Begazo rushed for 84 yards in 11 carries and scored on a 10-yard run with 4 minutes 3 seconds left in the third quarter to give the Trojans a 20-0 lead.

Begazo was the Trojans’ primary rusher because starter Jarrett Mahoney was sidelined with a concussion suffered last week against Saddleback. Kelvin Murray, the Trojans’ other top back who suffered an ankle injury against Saddleback, saw limited duty, carrying the ball one time for four yards.

But Murray also hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass from DeFeo in the second quarter and University had a 14-0 lead.

University (3-3, 1-0 in league) took the lead on its opening drive. The Trojans advanced the ball to the Laguna Beach 42-yard line. On a first down play, Begazo carried the ball to the 22-yard line, but was stripped of the ball. Teammate Jeff Albinio scooped up the ball before it touched the ground and ran in for a touchdown to put the Trojans ahead, 7-0.

University moved to a 21-0 lead when DeFeo connected with Gearson Contento on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 1:17 left in the half.

Laguna Beach (0-5-1, 0-1) was held to 63 yards rushing. Kyle Johnson was the leading rusher for the Artists with 29 yards in 14 carries.
