Driver Critically Hurt After 2 Cars Collide

Five people were injured, one critically, in a two-car collision Sunday on the Old Rincon Highway north of Ventura, authorities said.

The 4 p.m. crash occurred when a Nissan Sentra heading south made a U-turn in the path of a southbound Ford Taurus, according to a California Highway Patrol officer. Three elderly people in the Taurus were taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center with minor neck and back pain, and minor cuts, authorities said.

The driver of the Nissan, 25-year-old Tatyana Bersudskaya of Canoga Park, who suffered abdominal and pelvic injuries, and her 30-year-old female passenger were taken by Sheriff’s Department helicopter to the medical center, the officer said. Bersudskaya was listed in critical condition Sunday night; her passenger suffered moderate injuries.

Both of the women in the Nissan spoke only Russian, and authorities had to use an interpreter to help with the investigation, which is continuing.

Traffic in both lanes of the highway was blocked for about an hour.

The CHP did not release the identities of the other victims.
