5 Escapees From Arizona Lockups Still at Large
Law enforcement officials were searching Sunday for five convicts who escaped over the weekend from two correctional facilities near Phoenix.
The five--two from a high-security federal prison near Florence, Ariz., and three from a jail at the Akchin Indian Community near Phoenix--escaped Saturday or early Sunday.
The two convicts still at large from the federal facility--Edward Martin, 56, and Leslie Simpson, 28--were considered dangerous. Martin was convicted of sexual assault, and Simpson was in prison for murder. Six inmates had escaped from the Central Arizona Detention Center by cutting through three layers of fences.
In the second incident, five Indian prisoners escaped from the jail at the Akchin Indian Community, about 35 miles south of Phoenix. Two of the prisoners had been captured Saturday and the other three, all convicted of misdemeanors, were still at large Sunday.
