Three Roster Cuts Clearer Now

Share

Coach Del Harris all but made his three cuts official Friday and Saturday, giving Trevor Wilson, Juaquin Hawkins and David Booth only limited action while the Lakers played their only home games of the exhibition season in a move to clear as much time together for the regular-season roster.

That leaves Harris with only two real decisions before the Nov. 1 season opener, neither major and both adjustable:

--Who is the backup point guard, veteran Rumeal Robinson or first-round pick Derek Fisher? Experience gives Robinson an edge, at least until Fisher proves himself when the games matter, but there is something to be said for going with a rookie with far more potential.

“Both are good players,” Harris said. “They do a lot of good things. Both work hard on defense and both give up the ball. Obviously that bodes well for Derek Fisher. He’s 22 and in his first year and Rumeal is 29. That speaks well for Derek that he’s already on that level.”

--Who is the 12th man and who goes on the injured list?

A real injury in the next week and a half makes the decision for Harris, but concerns about how much Byron Scott had left at age 35 passed quickly and Corie Blount, while still having mental lapses that make it appear he does not know assignments, began to play much better once two-a-days ended and games started. That probably makes Travis Knight a candidate for the injured list.
