A former Sunland Elementary School teacher was sentenced Monday to 28 years in prison for molesting five girls during the 1994-95 school year.

John Sampson Njoroge, 30, was convicted Sept. 30 on 12 counts of committing a lewd act on a child, which included touching the girls’ bodies under or over their clothing.

San Fernando Superior Court Judge Charles Peven sentenced Njoroge to all but two years of the maximum prison term he could have received.

“I hope this sends a message to anyone out there that preys on children,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Cynthia Meagher-Walker after the sentencing at Van Nuys Superior Court. “We are going to convict you and put you away for as long as we can.”

Neither the girls nor their parents were present at the sentencing.

Njoroge worked at Sunland Elementary for more than three years before he was arrested.

Police arrested Njoroge on June 29, 1995, at the school after the girls told school officials he rubbed parts of their bodies in class when he leaned over to help them with schoolwork.
