Prop. 204
In his Oct. 13 letter Ted Brown says, “It’s a fact that 85% of California’s water goes to agri- culture--at a subsidized price.” He’s wrong.
According to the California Department of Water Resources, about two-thirds of the water that falls on the state each year is devoted to environmental uses and other outflow. Irrigated agriculture accounts for about 28%. Farmers do use about 80% of the state’s accessible, developed water. Only about 20% of that comes from the federal Central Valley Project, and the “subsidized price” Brown complains about has in fact risen sharply the past few years.
Manipulating of “facts” can’t disguise the reality facing California: Our state faces a water crisis. Prop. 204 will address that crisis by helping assure safe, reliable water supplies for all Californians. Vote yes on 204.
