Asian Group to Host Fund-Raising Dinner
The Asian & Pacific Islander Council of the San Fernando Valley will host a fund-raising dinner Friday night to introduce its new president and board members to the community.
The council is a nonprofit coalition of community organizations and social service providers that promote the social, cultural and civic interests of the Valley’s Asian Pacific Islander community, according to Susan Ng, the council’s program coordinator.
Bing Inocencio, president of Pierce College, will be the keynote speaker at the dinner. Money raised will fund APIC programs, which focus on Asian American youth, health care and other issues. The council also hosts community forums and workshops throughout the year.
Such services and programs play a special role for the Valley’s Asian and Pacific Islanders. Between 1980 and 1990 the population soared to 124,000, an increase from 5% to 8%.
The council’s new president, Kathy Oborn, is an assistant dean at Pierce College. The new governing board also includes Violet Fong Hom, Saul Handoko, George Takahashi, Donna A. Dasig, Do Young Lee, Pauline G. Young, Huai-Sea Yang and Shig Kimoto.
The dinner will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Golden China Inn, 8930 Corbin Ave., in Northridge. A pre-dinner social will begin at 6:30 p.m.
