New Age Old Jazz: Soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom, above, brings her modern jazz trio to the Cal State Northridge Performing Arts Center on Saturday night (F16). . . . With drummer Bobby Previte and Cameron Brown onbass, Bloom experiments with original material while putting a new spin on old standards. “When we play together, it just falls into place,” Bloom says. “Everything feels really good. It’s intimate and the music is full of interesting emotional extremes.”

Theater Awards: The third annual Artistic Directors’ Awards honored members of the Valley Theatre League this week, proving that the San Fernando Valley does appreciate live theater. . . . Lonny Chapman, Group Repertory artistic director, received a Lifetime Achievement Award, and awards were given in several other categories (F17).

Animal Rescue: The Wildlife Waystation, a rehabilitation center and haven for wild and exotic animals in Tujunga, is providing refuge for animals injured or displaced by the current wildfires. The Waystation also performs rescues and operates a hotline where it gives advice about how to handle situations involving wild animals, said Executive Director Martine Colette.
