JOB PROSPECTS: By adding high-tech touches to its career center, an Eastside nonprofit organization hopes it will spur hundreds of new job opportunities each week for the Latino community.

The CHARO Community Development Corp. celebrated the opening of its newly renovated facility this week, pledging to guide people through the competitive job market.

The one-stop career center, established in 1970, offers access to 50 Internet job banks and 30 computers and plans to offer more resume writing and interview preparation workshops. Job seekers can continue to take advantage of technical support, career advising and entrepreneurial training in English and Spanish. The facility also provides telephones and fax machines for direct link to potential employees.

Richard Amador, president of the organization, estimates that the career center generated more than $8 million in wages to the community last year.

“With the new technology we expect to double that this year,” Amador said.

The center is a collaborative effort of the Los Angeles Private Industry Council, CHARO Community Development Corp. and other area businesses. The center at 3951 E. Medford St. is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
