The California Department of Transportation has named a new director for District 7, the jurisdiction that covers state highways in Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Brent Felker, who comes from the Orange County-based District 12, assumes his new position Nov. 1. He replaces Ken Steele, who announced his retirement from state service earlier this year.

“Brent Felker brings to this very demanding and visible position a unique combination of experience, knowledge and record of accomplishment,” said James W. van Loben Sels, the state Caltrans director.

“He has proven himself under fire in helping deliver the state’s first privately financed toll road, in keeping the massive widening and reconstruction of Interstate 5 on track and bringing on line Orange County’s state-of-the-art transportation management center,” van Loben Sels said.

A University of Illinois graduate and a licensed civil engineer, Felker joined Caltrans in 1983.

He has held a variety of jobs within the agency.
