Road to Improvement

Freeways- the arteries of the Los Angeles transportation system and a necessity for car- dependent Southern California. To help keep things moving, Caltrans workers come up with ideas- everything from minor resurfacing to adding lanes. In the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, there are 13 major projects- each costing in excess of $1 million - planned through 2001, for a total of $94 million. In addition, three local freeways are scheduled to be furnished with carpool lanes, with a price tag of $152 million. Here are the major freeway and highway projects planned through 2001:
